Icom IC-781 Transceiver

Serial Number 3191

From the last run of Icom 781's .... Purchased in 2000 this supposedly came from the very last run of 781's or close to it ... I purchased it to mate up with my original 781 (which left last year) My idea was to make a ESSB rig out of it .... Number 3191 has about 1 hour on it as I tested it with the 257 filter installed, however the project was set aside when I realized that a great deal of work would be needed to correct the response on the headphone circuit. As with my previous 781 I include a variac which will run the 781 at 100 volts, where as we all know it runs much cooler .... but I would still recommend Rob Sherwood's fan kit just to be safe.

I ran the display up pretty high to show no drops or burnt spots

........

You don't see this very often, pictures of the feet of a rig, to show no scuff's-dirt etc, just a clean as the day it was made.

........

I may be right or wrong but I don't think the metal ID plate is typical 781 issue, I think it was thrown together to get an ID on the last run of rigs...I may be wrong, but!!

........

Manuals ... I purchase my service manual from second sources, because they are home bound .. in other words you can pull them apart, mark-copy-whatever

...........

The 257 is still in the rig ... and there is a dupe on the 102 ... had it around so I .....Then 781 went into a device from a company called.."Kill A Watt", this LCD readout device will show you the voltage/amps/frequency/and watts ... I had it in series with the variac, so I could monitor what the 781 was doing ... only cost 20 bucks, but a nice device. Run a google on, "Kill AWatt"

.

Here are the "Rack Handles", AC cord which has never been opened, and the full package of 781 connectors.

In Conclusion

If you want the best of the best ... here it is .. and I have to say, "Brand New", I agree with many who say the 781 with a DSP processor like the TimeWave 599XX, Sherwoods goodies, a variac, and some TLC and its a hard rig to beat, It always amazed when people like Doctor Rohde of Rohde & Schwarz say it stands alone, even with the big 10K rigs of today!! Now I hate to tell you what I paid for this rig back in the close out days, and the dealers who had them would not budge.

But for this unit, I think I am being fair to ask $3000.00 shipped for the rig, and $100 for the variac .. I didn't enclose the variac in the deal because most people interested in 781's already have one....and they weigh a ton to ship.

I am leery of the original 781 packaging it seems brittle and not to be trusted, however I am a expert bullet proof double box packager so no problem.. Interested, ..... email me at Bill@kc4pe.com, any form of payment is OK, the best is three Postal Money Orders, ECheck via PayPal, but no credit cards for PayPal ..........
